This semester, the MYP Design, Arts, and Language and Literature courses collaborated to develop an interdisciplinary learning unit titled “REVIVE: Giving New Life to Old Clothing.” Through upcycling used garments, students explored the importance of sustainability and resource reuse by integrating design thinking, artistic creation, photography, and reflective expression.

Throughout the project, students first investigated the environmental impact of fast fashion and examined how creative design can extend the lifecycle of clothing. Each student then selected an old garment and transformed it using techniques such as deconstruction, reconstruction, dyeing, sewing, and embellishment, creating renewed functionality and meaning through their designs.

After completing their redesigned garments, students wore their creations and searched around the campus for locations that best represented the concept of “Revive.” From sunlit lawns and story-filled architectural corners to learning spaces symbolizing hope and future possibilities, each photograph reflected students’ unique interpretations of renewal and transformation. Students also composed artist statements and written reflections, learning to communicate ideas effectively through both visual and written forms.

How Are Students Assessed?

Within the IB MYP framework, assessment emphasizes students’ learning processes and capability development. Teachers do not evaluate solely based on whether a product appears aesthetically pleasing or whether photographs look professional. Instead, assessment is conducted according to the official IB assessment criteria.

Design Assessment Criteria

Criterion A: Inquiring and Analyzing

  • Investigate issues related to sustainable fashion
  • Analyze design needs and identify problems

Criterion B: Developing Ideas

  • Generate a range of design concepts
  • Refine and improve proposed solutions

Criterion C: Creating the Solution

  • Transform design concepts into completed outcomes
  • Apply materials and techniques effectively

Criterion D: Evaluating

  • Reflect critically on the final product
  • Evaluate how successfully the design communicates its intended message

Arts Assessment Criteria

Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding

  • Demonstrate understanding of photography and artistic concepts

Criterion B: Developing Skills

  • Apply composition, lighting, and artistic techniques

Language and Literature Assessment Criteria

Criterion C: Thinking Creatively

  • Demonstrate creativity and personal expression

Criterion D: Responding

  • Analyze and explain artistic work through written and oral communication

Learning Matters More Than the Final Product

Within the IB MYP, the emphasis is not only placed on final outcomes but also on the complete learning journey—from inquiry and planning to creation and reflection. Every student may produce work in a different style, yet all students can succeed by demonstrating inquiry, creativity, problem-solving skills, and the ability to clearly communicate their ideas.

Through the REVIVE project, we hope students not only develop design and artistic skills but also cultivate a stronger sense of environmental responsibility and recognize how innovative thinking can create new value and possibilities from existing resources. This reflects the IB philosophy of nurturing lifelong learners with an international mindset.
